I've Barely Been Here
Sound artist Chris Kallmyer created a series of installations at the Headlands Center of the Arts. He collected objects from the rocky landscape of the Marin Headlands, both sound-objects and rock-objects, for one of the pieces titled "Objects found in a place."
Geophonographics
Will Schrimshaw's Ur-Writings seek to trace "the auto-affective inscriptions of the earth upon itself". Like a needle to a groove of vinyl, Schrimshaw is working on "a systematic means of listening to the earth surface and subterranean ruptures by way of tracing its various inscriptions." The Museum of Acoustic Geology is pleased to re-broadcast these tracings collected in Schrimshaw's research studio based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Hadean
The Hadean eon began with Earth's formation about 4.6 billion years ago and ended roughly 3.8 billion years ago. Hades is the Greek word for "Underworld," referring to conditions surmised on Earth at that time.

Listen to The Hadean eon by following these instructions.
1. Line the Dogleg Tunnel with flame throwers.
2. Seal both ends of the tunnel.
3. Fill the tunnel with a composition of 70% Carbon Dioxide, 11.5% Methane gas, 8.2% Hydrogen gas, 7% Water Vapour, and 3.3% of a noble gas of your choice.
4. Ignite the flame throwers and heat the tunnel atmosphere to 230 degrees Celsius.
5. With megaphones and microphones on each end, have a conversation with a friend through an atmosphere four billion years old.

The Miocene
The Miocene was named by Sir Charles Lyell and is derived from the Greek words μείων (meiōn, “less”) and καινός (kainos, “new”) and means "less recent"

The Holocene
Earth is currently passing through the Holocene epoch. The name is derived from the Greek words ὅλος (holos, whole or entire) and καινός(kainos, new) meaning "entirely recent."
Anyone can listen to and record the Holocene epoch. Participate in MoAG's Global Holocene Sound Map and upload your sounds to switchboard@museumofacousticgeology.org

The Archean
The Archean is derived from the ancient Greek "Αρχή" (Arkhē) which means "beginning, origin".

Now playing through November, the Archean Eon at the Turbine Hall! These tickets to the Sound Cannon show include a one hour sonic spectacle of volcanic eruptions, comet collisions, and audible cross sections of cratonic shields. A thousand buildings exist inside the Turbine Hall via sound cannons on lease from the US military. Walk around during the show and experience the various clouds of sound. At the finale, dynamite and pick axes will be projected on the cliff face of the plateau--the island’s own geologic origin exposed.

The Carboniferous
Carboniferous means "coal-bearing" from the Latin root, carbo. During this period Earth experienced glaciation and low sea levels. Organic matter was laid down and would later become coal beds.

A pirate radio station is installed somewhere in the bowels of Cockatoo Island, broadcasting acoustic translations of carbon spectra. Using the enclosed Ground-Penetrating Radio Receiver, your task is to find the signal and decipher its code. You might just learn the coordinates of Gondwanaland’s largest, untapped coal bed.

The Silurian
The Silurian period was named by Sir Roderick Murchison for a Celtic tribe of Wales, the Silures.

This sand, imported by MoAG’s branch at the dunes of Altyn-Emel National Park in Kazakhstan, is an acoustic threshold to the Silurian period, when arid conditions prevailed across Earth. Follow these instructions:
1. Wait for a hot, dry sunny day.
2. Pile this sand on the north apron of the island
3. Micro-avalanches will produce a resonance of about 450Hz caused by the shearing of sand.
4. Amplify the effect by bringing some friends (who will purchase additional sacks of MoAG singing sand.)
5. Blow the Opera House off its foundations when you convert the entire island into a sand dune humming to all of Sydney Harbour.

The Triassic
The Triassic, from the Latin trias meaning triad, was named in 1834 by Friedrich Von Alberti. He observed three layers: blackshales over chalk over red beds.

Unleash the power of the MoAG Universal Device for Eavesdropping on Triassic Rocks. Drive it in to a curious crack, and feel the amplitude of sandstone, humming 22.5 Hz into your bones. Leave no stone unturned or untapped.
